National NIH Ranking Increases to Top 25

The Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) moved up in the ranking of departments of psychiatry to #22 in the United States (among approximately 125 medical schools) for NIH funded research in 2008.  With over $12 million of NIH research funding awarded in 2008, the Department has increased its annual NIH research funding 427% over the past ten years.

For over 50 years, researchers in the Department of Psychiatry have focused on severe and disabling conditions affecting the brain, including addictive disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, childhood onset disorders such as autism, and dementia. Department of Psychiatry researchers continue to be successfully funded in research focused on animal model development and the neurobiology of neuropsychiatric illness. The Department has also greatly expanded pharmacological treatment trials in adult and child subject populations, utilizing investigator-initiated protocols as well as participation in multi-center trials.
