Welcome to the Department of Psychiatry
Hello! I would like to welcome you to the Department of Psychiatry website. Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is the only medical school in the state of Indiana and the second largest medical school in the United States. In part, this helps define our department’s clinical mission. We strive to provide outstanding, comprehensive psychiatric and psychological assessment and treatment for citizens from throughout Indiana and our neighboring states. We have developed state-of-the-art Specialty Clinics across the diagnostic spectrum for children, adolescents and adults for this purpose. I encourage you to browse our website’s clinical programs and to contact us for an appointment or to refer a patient for evaluation and possible treatment.
As the state of Indiana’s only academic Department of Psychiatry, our educational mission is vitally important. We are charged with providing our medical students with a fundamental exposure to clinical psychiatry so that they will be prepared to diagnose and potentially treat psychiatric/psychological problems in their patients in the primary care setting. We are responsible for training the next generation of psychiatrists and psychologists for the state of Indiana and beyond. Our Department houses accredited training programs for general psychiatry residents, child and adolescent psychiatry residents, and triple board residents (Pediatrics, General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry). In addition, we have formal fellowships in Addiction Psychiatry and Geriatric Psychiatry, and a new fellowship opportunity designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of psychiatrists in the assessment and treatment of individuals who are developmentally disabled. We also have one of the longest established Psychology Internship Programs in the country. Based upon the large and diverse clinical population we serve, and the various clinical settings in which we practice, we believe that the training experience for our students, residents, fellows and interns is unsurpassed. I urge you to read the summary of our educational programs on the website and to contact us if you would like more information on applying to one of our training programs.
Our third departmental mission is research. We have achieved an exponential rise in our research funding from federal, state, private foundation and industry sponsors in recent years. We have successfully recruited a number of talented investigators from across the country, allowing us to expand upon our well-established programs of research. Our faculty utilize advanced research methodology, including molecular biology, animal models, genetics, neuropathology, and neuroimaging to translate preclinical neuroscientific findings into direct clinical applications that will benefit patients. Please survey the research section of our website, including opportunities for participation in clinical research studies for yourself, a family member or friend or to refer one of your patients.
In summary, the Department of Psychiatry at the IUSM is vibrant, growing and looking to the future. We would like to thank you for visiting our website and encourage you to contact us directly if we can be helpful or answer additional questions.
Sincerely,
Christopher J. McDougle, M.D.
Chairman and Albert E. Sterne Professor of Psychiatry
